Industrial town and port on the Tees,
Cleveland, England, commercial and cultural
centre of the urban area formed by
Stockton-on-Tees, Redcar, Billingham,
Thornaby, and Eston; population (1983)
148,400. Formerly a centre of heavy industry,
it diversified its products in the 1960s. It
is the birthplace of the navigator Captain
James Cook (1728-79).
